Our Lady of Lourdes parish should be taken by the city of Revere, Massachusetts 02151 by eminent domain.
Recent published reports have stated that the final appeal to the Holy See in Rome to reopen Our lady of Lourdes church in Beachmont Massachusetts has been denied by his Holy Father. Now that we have finally been told it is a definite reality that the church will not reopen I feel it is time we should deal with the financial realities of the closure.
Because the buildings t were a church and support buildings like a rectory the Diocese, to my knowledge, never paid property taxes to the city on any of it. In exchange the city of Revere received spiritual and moral guidance for it’s Beachmont area residents. Now that it is no longer financially viable for his Holiness to provide this much needed spiritual and moral guidance to our citizens I think it is time we consider as a community taking these properties to ensure that they are used to serve the good people of Beachmont as they have for generations past. After all we did make a substantial investment in these properties by allowing the church to go tax free for all these years. Would it not therefor be prudent that these properties be taken to be used as a community center for the people of Beachmont rather then allowing the church to sell them to a developer who would most surely place housing on the site that would create a further burden on parking and other city services?
Perhaps once the paperwork to take the properties by eminent domain has been filed the diocese will make an additional appeal to his Holiness and perhaps then our pleas will finally be heard and our church reopened as it should?
Thank you,
